El presente texto ofrece al lector una breve introducción a las redes de comunicaciones industriales y una visión práctica en profundidad de las mismas, haciendo para ello uso de uno de los sistemas con mayor implantación en el mercado, la familia de Autómatas Programables SIMATIC S7 del fabricante alemán SIEMENS. En primer lugar se introduce brevemente el leguaje de programación STEP 7 necesario para trabajar con los autómatas programables y su posterior interconexión. Posteriormente se aborda la programación y puesta en marcha de redes que operen bajo la tecnología de SIEMENS MPI (Multi Protocol Interface) y los estándares Profibus FDL (Fieldbus Data Link), Profibus DP (Distributed Peripherial) e Industrial Ethernet y se muestran además las posibilidades de utilización de potentes funciones de diagnóstico, de gran utilidad en la puesta en marcha de instalaciones.
