Aunque se licenció en Derecho, José García Mercadal (Zaragoza, 1883 - Madrid, 1975) descubrió desde muy joven que su verdadera vocación era escribir y consagró toda su vida a la literatura y al periodismo, a los que se dedicó en cuerpo y alma durante más de seis décadas. Amigo y colaborador de varios escritores de la generación del 98 y la del 14, mantuvo una larga y estrecha relación con Azorín, a quien dedicó esta completa y sentida biografía, que es, muy probablemente, su obra más acabada.
