El botxí –un filipí de 44 anys, també protegit de Jaume Reixach– fou detingut la mateixa tarda i confessà l'autoria del crim. El jutge que instruí el sumari declarà «no imputat» Jaume Reixach i ordenà que el pis no fos precintat. Malgrat això, les informacions aparegudes als mitjans de comunicació i, sobretot, la censura episcopal van abocar Reixach a un assetjament psicològic i moral del qual es defensa en aquest llibre.
