Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) nació en Boston, Massachusetts, y estudió en el Smith College. En 1955 fue a la Universidad de Cambridge con una beca Fullbright, donde conoció a Ted Hughes, con quien después se casó. En vida publicó un libro de poemas, El coloso (1960), y una novela, La campana de cristal (1963).;Cuando su título más conocido, Ariel, fue publicada póstumamente, A. Álvarez escribió en el Observer: “Si bien los poemas son vengativos, desesperanzados y destructivos, también son tiernos, abiertos, inusualmente inteligentes, sarcásticos, firmes... Son obras de gran pureza artística y, a pesar de todo su nihilismo, de gran generosidad... El libro es un gran acontecimiento literario”.
