Tras colaborar con The Columbia Review, escenificar alguna obra en Cambridge y trabajar un tiempo haciendo tarjetas de felicitación, Robert Gottlieb tropezó con un puesto en Simon and Schuster en 1955. Algo más de una década después, el ya reconocido editor se trasladaba al sello Alfred A. Knopf, en donde desarrollaría la mayor parte de su carrera. Publicó una larga lista de grandes autores, como Toni Morrison, Doris Lessing, John Le Carré, Michael Crichton, Robert Caro, Nora Ephron o Bruno Bettelheim. En 1987 pasó a hacerse cargo del New Yorker, afrontando con ello los desafíos y satisfacciones que conllevaba la dirección de una de las revistas más destacadas de Estados Unidos, y en donde permanecería un lustro. De todo ello nos habla ahora en este libro de memorias.
