Michel Leiris (París, 1901) ha sido uno de los más importantes miembros del "movimiento surrealista". Junto a Georges Bataille y Roger Caillais fundó el Collége de Sociologie, orientando su obra, desde entonces, al estudio de la etnología. Su obra literaria es, esencialmente, autobiográfica y ha sido comparada con la de Proust (Soy un especialista, un maniático de la confesión) por su frialdad, sutileza y ambición. Como Proust, considera la literatura un arte, pero un arte básicamente científico, basado todo en una supuesta terapia personal en la que se confiesa de manera minifiesta y absoluta, buscando su propia expiación.
