En España, donde el Derecho Romano había ejercido siempre tanta influencia, no existía ninguna obra que recopilara los códigos romanos, desde la Instituta hasta las Novelas, el Digesto o el Código de Justiniano. En 1889, Ildefonso L. García del Corral, autor de esta cuidada edición facsímil, escribía en el prólogo de su obra: " (...) El fin que me propongo es dar a conocer y divulgar el Corpus Iuris Civilis".Con ese marcado carácter divulgativo, el autor recopiló el Cuerpo del Derecho Civil Romano traduciendo al castellano el texto de las leyes romanas, para facilitar su conocimiento, pero publicando ese mismo texto en latín, "el único que puede dar autoridad a esta edición". Editado en guáflex con estampaciones en marrón, rojo y oro, incluye una introducción redactada por José Javier de los Mozos Touya, catedrático de Derecho Romano de la Universidad de Valladolid.
