La obra, escrita en 1633, no vio la luz hasta 1664, fecha en que apareció en París un volumen titulado L'Homme de René Descartes et un Traité de la formation du ftus. La traducción y las notas han sido realizadas por Pedro Pardos, Carlos Vicén y Adolfo Alonso. El profesor José Luis Rodríguez ha escrito un extenso prólogo en el que subraya las implicaciones filosóficas y científicas del mecanicismo de Descartes. La Description constituye, justamente, una de las muestras más representativas del mecanicismo y, por ello mismo, ocupa un lugar relevante tanto en la Historia de la Medicina como en la Historia de la Filosofía.
