  • Bonding materials by means of adhesives is one of the most recent technologies introduced in industry. Since the 60?s the footwear industry uses adhesives to bond several parts of the shoes, the most critical bonding is the upper to sole bonding. Most of the books devoted to footwear lacked of sufficient content in the understanding of the bonding process in shoe manufacturing. To our knowledge, in the existing literature there is not a book specifically devoted to adhesive bonding in the shoe industry. In this book, the relevant publications by SATRA, INESCOP and the University of Alicante ? were compiled. The book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter provided an overview of the bonding in the shoe industry. Conventional surface preparation of different sole and upper materials is described in chapter two, with special attention to the chlorination of rubber soles by organic solvent solutions of trichloroisocyanuric acid. Both solvent-born and water-borne polyurethane and polychloroprene adhesives are described in detail in chapter three with special reference to the formulation and composition of these adhesives. Chapter four is devoted to testing, quality control and durability of adhesive joints. Finally, the future trends in the adhesives and surface preparation of materials in the shoe industry are described.
