Se abordan problemas geográficos, toponímicos, mitológicos, filológicos, culturales e históricos relacionados con el poema épico más importante de la literatura castellana.;El "Cantar" (siglo XII) ocupa un lugar preferente en la tradición épica medieval. La imagen más difundida del Cid procede de la "Leyenda de Cardeña", inventada en la segunda mitad del siglo XIII. Pero el Cid del "Cantar" y el de Cardeña son dos personajes diferentes. Los textos que concuerdan con el sentido común y con las variables físicas elementales son -a juicio del autor- los que deben preferirse a la hora de interpretar al personaje histórico.
