Dins del terreny del folklore, Mestres havia de recollir, també, unes Llegendes i tradicions del Montseny (1933). Amb les seves Tradicions, Apel·les Mestres s'insereix amb èxit al moviment intel·lectual del darrer terç del segle XIX que volia recuperar per a l'alta cultura el patrimoni literari popular en els seus diversos vessants. A diferència, però, dels seus predecessors, renuncia al caràcter erudit i reelabora lingüísticament els textos, tot enriquint-los amb una bona dosi d'ironia i de profunda habilitat literària.
